Antimicrobial Resistance Community Reference Group

We are establishing an Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Community Reference Group (CRG) to provide community perspectives on the research activities into AMR within the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre and in association with the Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines & Infectious Diseases.

We are seeking expressions of interest from Western Australians interested in research aimed at tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The World Health Organization has recognised AMR as a top global health concern, projecting over 10 million annual deaths within the next 30 years.

AMR happens when bacteria develop ways to resist antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines. These ‘superbugs’ can cause very bad and uncontrolled infections, and there are limited medicines to treat these bacteria.

The burden of antibiotic resistance is greatest in children, who receive antibiotics more than any other medication type. And those with underlying illnesses like cystic fibrosis are at higher risk of developing AMR.

This community reference group will provide community perspectives on the research activities into AMR within the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre and in association with the Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines & Infectious Diseases, at The Kids Research Institute Australia.

The group will advise on AMR research, the development of research grant applications and implementation, community engagement strategies and communications about AMR research.

Meetings will be held four times a year and be a maximum of two hours. We will pay an honorarium of $50 per hour for meetings.

If you have any questions, please call Community Involvement Coordinator Mitch Messer on 08 6319 1413.

To register your interest in being involved please complete the form on this page and click ‘submit.’.

Expressions of interest will close on 31 May 2024.
