Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity

At The Kids, we don’t just accept difference — we celebrate it, and we support it for the benefit of our employees and our community.

At The Kids, we don’t just accept difference — we celebrate it, and we support it for the benefit of our employees and our community.

We know that creating an environment that welcomes, accepts and embraces the diversity of our team and reflects the diversity of our community will lead to the best outcomes for the communities we serve.

We want all staff and students, no matter your age, gender, nationality, ability, or culture, to feel safe, supported and empowered so together we can make The Kids the best place to work for everyone.

In this video, people from The Kids explain why diversity and inclusion is so important.

Our commitment

At The Kids Research Institute Australia, we are committed to understanding the lived experiences of our people and identifying ways to help everyone feel safe, welcome and included.

We actively encourage conversations about equity and inclusivity, and we implement actions to support the attraction, progression and retention of underrepresented groups.

Our focus on equity reflects our strong belief for The Kids Research Institute Australia to foster a working environment where people can bring their full selves to work, because everyone belongs here.

Advancing inclusivity

Aboriginal Employment and Careers Development Strategy

t’s imperative that Aboriginal people are at the forefront of work that contributes to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. At The Kids, we recognise the strengths and lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, students and researchers across the Institute. Through the Aboriginal Employment and Career Development Strategy, we are committed to attracting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students and building capacity by supporting their professional development and growth. We are also establishing local workforces that are responsive to community needs, and we are continuing to build a culturally secure workplace culture.

Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Athena SWAN Bronze Award

We are proud recipients of the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Athena SWAN Bronze Award, which recognises our commitment to advancing the careers of women in science and to improve gender equity and diversity within the Institute. We are continuing to work towards a greater impact and a Silver Award. This involves exploring inclusivity from many intersecting lenses and supporting the many identities and experiences people bring to The Kids.

Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (GEDI) Council

Our established Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (GEDI) Council reflects our strong beliefs for The Kids to perpetuate safe working environments of inclusivity, respect, and belonging. The group is committed to understanding the experiences of people at The Kids, and identifying ways to help people at the Institute feel safe, welcome, and included. Focussing on Intersectionality

We must pay particular attention to how elements of diversity come together (or intersect) to affect equity. This is known as intersectionality. The Kids has formed multiple Special Interest Groups so that our diversity and inclusion initiatives support the many intersectional identities of our people. Some of the areas we pay attention to include:

  • Supporting carers
  • Supporting people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities
  • Supporting people with chronic conditions and disability
  • Supporting people who are neurodivergent
  • Encouraging diverse job applicants
  • Supporting Culturally and Linguistically Diverse people
  • Voice safety
