Research Assistant Child Health, Development and Education

An exciting opportunity based in Adelaide, to support research into language development during the early years.

The Kids Research Institute Australia is one of the nation's leading medical research organisations with impressive facilities in Subiaco, Western Australia. It is home to more than 500 staff and postgraduate students who are dedicated to tackling the major causes of childhood disease, disability and disadvantage. Our research teams are among the world's best and we have strong affiliations with Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and all the major Western Australian universities, particularly The University of Western Australia and Curtin University.

Based in Adelaide, the Fraser Mustard Centre is a joint initiative between The Kids Research Institute Australia the Department of Education, South Australia. The Child Health, Development and Education team within the Centre has an opening for a Research Assistant position located in Adelaide, South Australia to join the Language in Little Ones study team. The position is funded by a National Health and Medical Research Council project grant and supports the study Project Manager.

The amount of language stimulation from parent to child could be the key driver behind intergenerational inequality. Children learn language through social interaction and this study will significantly enhance our current understanding of exposure to language in the child's home environment. The Language in Little Ones (LiLO) study utilises advanced speech called Language Environment Analysis (LENA) to demonstrate how inequalities in the early years have far reaching consequences for later health and development.

This position will support the LiLO study by:

  • Recruiting study participants
  • Driving to study participants' residences to administer tests and collect data
  • Interacting effectively with young children and parents to encourage continued participation
  • Entering and storing data accurately, and working in collaboration with other project staff

The successful candidate should have:

  • An undergraduate qualification in psychology, public health, allied health profession, nursing or a related degree.
  • Experience working with families with young children (under 5 years old).
  • Experience in recruitment of participants into a longitudinal study.
  • Current drivers licence and use of a privately owned, roadworthy vehicle for work-related travel.
  • The ideal candidate will be organised, positive, reliable, hard-working, have good attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills.

Two roles available - Full time and 0.5 FTE commencing early July 2018 until 31 December 2018 with the possibility of extension.
The successful application will need to provide a current National Police Check and WWCC before commencement. Remuneration package includes access to generous salary packaging.
