The Opportunity

The Animal Ethics Officer plays a vital part in coordinating the oversight activities of our Animal Ethics Committee and the management of robust policies, procedures and systems for animal ethics, welfare and research.

The Role

As Animal Ethics Officer you will work closely with the Manager Research Governance, the Chair of the Animal Ethics Committee, Animal Welfare Officer, researchers and other professionals at The Kids to progress high quality child health research in an ethically responsible manner.

You will coordinate policies, procedures and systems to ensure that the Animal Ethics Committee, staff and researchers meet the requirements of the Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

This is a permanent full-time opportunity.

The Experience

You are a dedicated compliance/quality management professional with attention to detail, experience in providing high level committee secretariat support and an ability to understand and operationalise regulatory requirements. You will have a relevant tertiary qualification and you will be able to demonstrate the following experiences and / or skills:

  • Experience providing compliance and / or quality management services in highly regulated environment including ability to understand & provide advice on compliance with legislation, regulations and / or codes
  • Experience providing effective committee secretariat functions
  • Professional experience in a research, academic, medical, scientific or technical environment
  • Excellent attention to detail, prioritisation, time-management and organisation skills to meet multiple deadlines
  • High-level written and report writing skills
  • Proven communication & interpersonal skills (must be able to liaise, report & coordinate across various organisational levels)
  • Skilled user of Microsoft office suite (preferably including Access) and able to learn new IT systems
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision

Ideally you will also be able to demonstrate some or all of the following experiences and / or skills:

  • Knowledge of Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 8th Edition (2013)
  • Experience with animal research, welfare and / or ethics
  • Experience writing SOPs in a research or technical environment
  • Experience driving development or modifications to network or cloud-based information management systems
  • Experience in a medical research institute and / or University
  • Professional experience designing, reviewing and / or delivering training programs

The successful candidate will be asked to provide a satisfactory National Police Check prior to commencement.
