Flow Facility & Equipment Specialist

The Opportunity

The Flow Facility offers a sorting and analysis service as well as formal training to other researchers in the use of the equipment and related software. The goal of this service is to expand the research capability of the Institute community.

The Role

Our team is looking for a suitably experienced and enthusiastic scientist or technician to take the lead in the administration and operation of a comprehensive flow cytometry service for research groups within the Institute.  Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you will maintain and operate analytical flow cytometers (LSRFortessa, X20 Fortessa and another instrument currently under procurement) and cell sorter (FACSAriaIII) in a physical containment level II laboratory.

This role assists in training graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technologists to operate the analytical instruments and to analyse their data off-line using FlowJo and other custom software packages. You will interact with staff at all levels, both internally and externally, regarding relevant research topics. You will be a strong team player with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.

You will be responsible for daily instrument calibration, fluidics and electronics checks and cross-beam fluorescence compensation. After the instruments have been appropriately aligned, calibrated and compensated, you will perform high-speed sorting of rare cell populations for clients.

You will build strong relationships with the Facility’s customer base and foster new relationships with clients, provide expert product support, oversee routine operations, ensure the Facility’s capabilities are maximized and provide general support for other high-end equipment within the Institute. Operating as an individual technical advisor supporting research activity through the provision of high-level specialist flow cytometric expertise. Support of other high-end equipment within the laboratory and general operations to support the Laboratory Manager is also required.

This is a Full Time maximum term contract of 2 years. Salary will be between $75,000 to $85,000 per annum plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 9.5% (total package will be in the range $89,333 to $103,114 per annum) with access to generous salary packaging.

Your Experience

  • A solid background in the use of FACS for research
  • Confident in working autonomously in the operation of cell sorters
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and a demanding schedule within a busy core facility
  • Relevant expertise and excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • In depth knowledge of analysis software packages including CellQuest, Diva and FlowJo.
  • A good degree of computer literacy (Word processing, Excel spreadsheets)
  • Impeccable record keeping skills, compatible with intellectual property requirements
  • Superior interpersonal, communication (both written and verbal) and negotiation skills required for the training and support of research staff and students
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail will ensure success in the administrative aspect of the role

The successful candidate will be asked to provide a satisfactory National Police Check prior to commencement.
