Research Assistant Bioassay Development/Screening

Applicant must have solid experience in tissue culture, in vivo techniques, flow cytometry and molecular biology.

The Kids Research Institute Australia’s Drug Discovery Unit is working at the cutting-edge of peptide-based drug discovery. The research of the unit is funded via a commercial entity named “Phylogica”, which was the first spin-off company from the Institute. Listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Phylogica (PYC) is a specialist drug discovery company that identifies new prototype drugs for pharmaceutical partners. In the last few years, Phylogica has entered into alliances with several of the leading global Pharmaceutical companies, including Roche, Pfizer, Medimmune (AstraZeneca), Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) and Genentech (a subsidiary of Roche).

We are seeking a highly motivated, ambitious and skilled individual to be part of a young, energetic and interdisciplinary research team.

  • The dynamic working environment requires candidates to have strong analytical and conceptualisation skills, to work productively in a team setting, and be willing to adapt to ongoing corporate and academic needs.  
  • Applicants must have solid experience in tissue culture, in vivo techniques, flow cytometry and molecular biology.  
  • Demonstrated skills in oncology models, Westerns, ELISA, Alphascreen assays and real-time PCR methods as well as experience in robotic liquid handling would be advantageous.

Activities will include:

  • Studies on in vivo oncology models
  • Tissue culture
  • A variety of in vitro immunological assays, such as measurement of cell products/responses using flow cytometry, proliferation, cell cycle and ELISA assays. Analysis of data using statistical and database computer packages
  • Assist in planning research projects in collaboration with supervisor and independent  day to day planning of research activities
  • Undertake laboratory work consistent with the requirement of Good Laboratory Practice
  • Assist with the preparation of publications and reports
  • Maintain current knowledge of scientific literature relating to the project
  • Assist other team members with projects as required (demonstrate flexibility with regard to sharing skills across various projects)
  • Present data and contribute as required in lab/company meetings

This is a full time fixed term position for 12 months with a strong possibility of extension.
