Research Assistant - Protein Engineering

Seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Assistant with experience in recombinant protein expression and purification

The Drug Discovery Unit in The Kids Research Institute Australia is working at the cutting-edge of peptide-based drug discovery. The research of the unit is funded via a commercial entity named “Phylogica”, which was the first spin-off company from The Kids Research Institute Australia. Listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Phylogica (PYC) www.phylogica.com is a specialist drug discovery company that identifies new prototype drugs for pharmaceutical partners. In the past few years, Phylogica has entered into alliances with several of the leading global Pharmaceutical companies, including Roche, Pfizer, Medimmune (AstraZeneca), Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) and Genentech (a subsidiary of Roche).

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated, ambitious and skilled individual to be part of a young, energetic and interdisciplinary research team. The dynamic working environment requires candidates to have strong analytical and conceptualisation skills, to work productively in a team setting, and be willing to adapt to ongoing corporate and academic needs.  Applicants must have solid experience in recombinant protein expression and purification. Demonstrated skills in yeast and/or mammalian protein expression systems, protein-protein interaction techniques, dynamic light scattering protein analysis and HPLC would be advantageous. This is a full-time fixed-term position for 12 months with a strong prospect of continuation.

Selection Criteria

To be considered for this position applicants must address the selection criteria in a separate document attached to the Cover Letter:

  • A BSc (Hons) in appropriate disciplines such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Microbiology
  • At least 2 years post-degree experience in a research laboratory
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in a wide range of appropriate protein expression, purification and protein analysis techniques, including bacterial expression systems, chromatographic methods (such as affinity, ion exchange and size exclusion using FPLC/HPLC)
  • Demonstrated skills in molecular biology techniques, including DNA cloning strategies and analysis
  • Enthusiasm to work on commercially-orientated projects and willingness to work to stringent timelines
  • Excellent computer, written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and organisational skills, and ability to maintain accurate research records
  • Ability to work both independently and productively within a dynamic team environment
