Research Assistant Neutrophils in CF

Research assistant position in international project studying neutrophil and airway epithelial interactions in early cystic fibrosis lung disease.

Vacancy for a highly motivated graduate Research Assistant to join an international research team led by Dr Luke Garratt, A/Professor Anthony Kicic, Professor Stephen Stick (all The Kids Research Institute Australia) and A/Prof Rabindra Tirouvanziam (Emory University, Atlanta USA) to conduct research into neutrophil fate and function in very early cystic fibrosis lung disease.
 
This project will follow infants diagnosed with cystic fibrosis throughout the first 2 years of life and monitor neutrophilic inflammation in the airways and peripheral blood using clinical samples obtained by the Australian Respiratory Early Surveillance Team for Cystic Fibrosis (AREST CF). In addition, it will also model a variety of early life airway challenges in the laboratory using cell culture to study neutrophil responses to these environments.
 
The Role

This position is based at the Harry Perkins Institute for Medical Research (Nedlands) but also conduct work at The Kids Research Institute Australia (Subiaco). He or she will be contributing to processing and characterisation of paediatric airway and blood samples by multiple fluid and cell based analyses, performing in vitro experiments using cell culture and common respiratory pathogens, as well as assist in the collation of clinical data, amongst other research duties.

Essential Criteria:

  • Basic laboratory skills ie aseptic technique, chemical handling, accurate pipetting
  • Understanding of PC2 regulations and work practices
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a large team
  • Project and time management skills
  • Flexibility for non-standard hours when necessary for experiments / conference calls
  • Current vaccinations to be able to work with human samples (Hep A/B), tetanus


This is a full time role/Fixed term for one year with the possibility of extension.
