Research Assistant Phage Engineering

We are seeking a highly motivated, ambitious and skilled individual to be part of a young, energetic and interdisciplinary research team.

The Kids Research Institute Australia’s Drug Discovery Unit is working at the cutting-edge of peptide-based drug discovery.

The research of the unit is funded via a commercial entity named “Phylogica”, which was the first spin-off company from The Kids Research Institute Australia. Listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Phylogica (PYC) is a specialist drug discovery company that identifies new prototype drugs for pharmaceutical partners. In the past few years, Phylogica has entered into alliances with several of the leading global Pharmaceutical companies, including Roche, Pfizer, Medimmune (AstraZeneca), Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) and Genentech (a subsidiary of Roche).

We are seeking a highly motivated, ambitious and skilled individual to be part of a young, energetic and interdisciplinary research team. The dynamic working environment requires candidates to have strong analytical and conceptualisation skills, to work productively in a team setting, and be willing to adapt to ongoing corporate and academic needs.  Applicants must have solid experience in molecular biology, microbiology and tissue culture.  Demonstrated skills with protein purification, peptide handling, Westerns, ELISA and flow cytometry as well as experience in robotic liquid handling would be advantageous.

This is a full-time fixed-term position for 12 months with a strong prospect of continuation.

Activities will include:

  • Growth and analysis of (PC2) bacterial cultures (E. coli and clinically relevant bacterial strains); infection with bacteriophage
  • Cloning and PCR; DNA manipulation for the generation of bacteriophage libraries
  • Screening of bacteriophage libraries with bacteria and mammalian cells
  • Tissue culture of standard cell lines, viability and toxicity assays
  • Analysis of data using statistical and database computer packages
  • Assist in planning research projects in collaboration with supervisor and independent day to day planning of research activities
  • Undertake laboratory work consistent with the requirement of Good Laboratory Practice
  • Assist with the preparation of publications and reports
