Julian Heng is an Adjunct Associate Professor with over 20 years’ program management experience as a former research-intensive academic with external grant funding success. In May 2024, he was appointed Program Manager for the infection and Intervention Disease Modelling (iIDM) laboratory, led by Professor Melissa Penny.
Julian has experience in applying for and managing externally funded, multi-year research projects (12 projects totalling more than AUD$5M as investigator (since 2004), including AUD$3M as lead investigator). Julian has extensive experience in strategic planning and execution of multi-stakeholder projects and previously collaborated with over 150 researchers all over the world to publish research on genetic brain disorders, and to improve the clinical diagnosis of brain conditions in children worldwide.
Julian has experience in setting up, relocating and operating successfully across four universities (from 2008-2018), coordinating staff and student relocations and managing all aspects of research operations as a productive business unit. He also has experience in direct supervision of teams of up to 14 (2008-2022), working with researchers and trainees to their meet publishing, external funding and mentoring KPIs. Julian has mentored a total of 50 staff and students to their chosen careers.
Julian holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Melbourne (Australia) (2002), a Bachelor’s of Science with First Class Honours from the University of Western Australia (1996), as well as a Diploma of Counselling from the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors (Australia), attained in 2022.
