Aboriginal Health Researchers Win Major Discovery Grants
Researchers from Perth's Centre for Research Excellence in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing have won more than $1.3 million in competitive funding for Indigenous mental health and parenting projects.
The Centre, based at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, was awarded two major grants today under the Discovery Indigenous scheme from the Australian Research Council.
The projects are:
Promoting positive perinatal mental health, parenting, cultural and spiritual wellbeing, and resilience in Aboriginal parents in Western Australia
Prof Rhonda Marriott, Prof Fiona Stanley, Prof Nick de Klerk, A/Prof Cheryl Kickett-Tucker,Asst/Prof Roz Walker, Ms Denise Groves
Total $735,000.00
Cultural continuity and change: Indigenous solutions to mental health issues

Total $609,224.00

Institute Director Professor Fiona Stanley said the grants process was extremely competitive and she was thrilled that the Centre had won two of the 10 grants awarded nationwide.
"The projects are both headed by outstanding Indigenous researchers and are focussed on building on the strengths and knowledge within Aboriginal communities to address some very tough issues," Professor Stanley said.
"This reflects the Centre's commitment to changing the approach to the delivery of services to Aboriginal people to ensure that they are culturally appropriate, responsive and, in the long run, much more effective."
