It's goodbye high heels and handbag, hello hiking boots and backpack as The Kids for Child Health Research's Acting Director gets set to conquer a mountain in a personal crusade against childhood cancer.
On July 8, Professor Moira Clay will fly out to France and Italy as part of The Telethon Adventurers challenge to raise critical funds to assist researchers in discovering the causes, and hopefully one day a cure, for this devastating disease.
Joining Rick Parish and his faithful band of adventurous fundraisers, Moira will give it everything she's got in her bid to conquer Italy's highest peak, Gran Paradiso, as well as test every inch of muscle and mind in a series of daredevil pursuits in Chamonix, France.
Over a week she will try her hand at tandem paragliding, rock climbing, mountain biking, canyoning and some white-knuckle, white-water rafting, all in the name of raising much needed funds for the most exceptional of causes.
"There's no hiding the fact that cancer remains the number one killer disease in children. It's a shattering diagnosis and one that our The Kids research teams are working tirelessly to overcome" Moira said.
"Our research work is making incredible progress, but there are still crucial questions to be answered and I am absolutely determined to do anything I can to raise the money to help find those answers."
Moira's determination and grit to raise as much money as possible for The Telethon Adventurers has seen her take on a variety of dares and challenges from work colleagues and friends including an hour-long race up and down Perth's muscle-ripping 'Jacob's Ladder', dressing up for a dare in full climbing gear to address a The Kids staff morning tea and agreeing to take part in a fitness-based planking challenge in full kit.
The Telethon Adventurers fundraising group was established in 2010 in honour of Rick Parish's 4-year old son Elliot who touched the hearts of all West Australians when he fought, and tragically lost, a very brave battle against cancer.
"There are courageous youngsters all across WA just like Elliot who are fighting for their lives every single day. This adventure is my way of trying to support their incredibly brave struggle. This is my way of waging war on cancer." said Moira.
