The Telethon Kids Institute has welcomed the expansion of clinical services for young people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
The State Government today allocated $195,000 to fund the Fastrack Clinic at UWA to conduct training, research and assessment in young people aged under 18.
Institute Director Professor Jonathan Carapetis said the clinic complements a range of research and programs underway at Telethon Kids.
"This clinic will not only grow the practical resources but increase awareness of FASD and enable government agencies to better support children and adults who have been affected," he said.
"We know that exposure to alcohol in pregnancy can have life-long effects and that these children too often find themselves in the justice system.
"A holistic approach to prevention and treatment for those affected will have community-wide benefits."
Professsor Carapetis said researchers and clinicians at the UWA Clinic and Telethon Kids have a strong collaboration that will action on FASD.
