At the Institute's Annual General Meeting on May 27, Professor Michael Good was elected to our Board of Directors.
Michael is a NHMRC Australia Fellow at Griffith University, the past Director of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and the former Chairman of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia
He graduated MD PhD DSc from the University of Queensland and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne and undertook postdoctoral training as a Visiting Scientist at the US National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
His interests are in the field of immunity and vaccine development for malaria and streptococcus. His group has developed candidate vaccines which are now in clinical trials. He is an editor on several scientific journals and is an author of over 300 peer-reviewed publications.
In 2008, Michael was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for contributions to medical research and education. In 2009, he won the Australian Museum CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science. In 2010, he was awarded an NHMRC Australia Fellowship and established the Laboratory of Vaccines for the Developing World at Griffith University. In that year he was also elected to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. In 2014 he was elected to the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
Chairman of the Board, John Langoulant, said Michael will provide important research insights and perspectives to the Board. His appointment follows the retirement from the Board of Professor Anne Kelso who was recently appointed CEO of the National Health and Medical Research Council. John thanked Anne for her outstanding contribution to the Board since 2008 which included regularly visiting Perth from Melbourne to attend Board strategy sessions.
