The fifth Big Elders meeting/gathering was held on the Wednesday, 28th of February 2024 at Burswood on Swan. This meeting was attended by 57 Elders who heard presentations about the Moort Dandjoo Kaadadjiny (Family Together Learning), an early years program and the Ngulluk Moort, Ngulluk Boodja, Ngulluk Wirin (Our Family, Our Country, Our Spirit), an out-of-home care study. 

Moort Dandjoo Kaadadjiny Program

  • Moort Dandjoo Kaadadjiny (Family Together Learning) supported by Lotterywest (2021-2023) and the Journey Together Initiative/BHP (2024). 
  • The program provided Aboriginal children and their families in Willagee and surrounding suburbs with an early years family learning and support program designed and delivered by Aboriginal people. 
  • Moort Dandjoo Kaadadjiny program worked closely with Elders and the community to deliver a culturally safe program for young Aboriginal children and their families. 
  • Aunty Oriel Green OAM and Aunty Doris Hill provided ongoing governance for the program. 

Ngulluk Moort, Ngulluk Boodja, Ngulluk Wirin Study 

  • This research study was formerly known as Changing the Paradigm to Improve Outcomes for Aboriginal Children in Out-of-Home Care.
  • It is Aboriginal led, designed and delivered with cultural and leadership by the Child Protection and Removal Elder Co-researchers: Aunty Millie Penny AM and Aunty Charmaine Pell. 
  • An Aboriginal Community Advisory Group and a Professional Aboriginal Advisory Group provide cultural guidance and advice on the design and direction of the research. 
  • Research team: Aunty Millie Penny AM, Aunty Charmaine Pell, Dr Sharynne Hamilton, Carol Michie and Larissa Jones. 
  • Partnership organisations: Key Assets Australia, Life Without Barriers and MacKillop Family Services
