Abstract:
Otitis media (OM) is a common problem worldwide.
It carries a large disease burden and is associated with numerous complications. In Australia, 793,535 children aged 14 or younger were affected by acute otitis media (AOM) in 2003, and 73% of those children experienced their first episode by age 1 year
This study was the first to concurrently identify middle ear pathogens in both bacterial biofilm and intracellularly in the middle ear mucosa of children and to identify extensive DNA stranding in the MEF from children with AOM.
