Abstract:
Many of the factors that determine success in school stem from the period before children enter primary school.

Although children's later experiences can still have an effect, developments in early childhood have long-lasting effects on health, behaviour and learning outcomes for years to come.

The available statistics show big disparities in developmental outcomes for children in Indonesia both at an early age and in primer school, although there is a lack of data for children aged 0-6.

Indonesia can pride itself on having primary school enrolment rates that are now close to 100 percent for both boys and girls at all income levels.

At higher levels of schooling, however, disparities emerge.
