Abstract:
Precautionary allergen labelling (PAL) is the main communication tool available to indicate safety levels for food-allergic consumers with regard to potential allergens present in pre-packaged foods. VITAL is a valuable innovation, and the consensus achieved at the roundtable discussion has the potential to assist in its increased uptake by the industry. Gaps in the literature were identified, which, once addressed, will assist in extending the VITAL programme to improve its utility. There is potential for the certification of PAL as well as the development of a permissive labelling indication. Improved education is also required to ensure that practitioners and organisations supporting food-allergic patients are providing consistent information regarding the foods that are safe for them to consume.
