Abstract:
Neurological impairments and activity limitations in Rett syndrome (RTT) impose stress on the musculoskeletal system. This chapter reviews the prevalence, characteristics, and clinical management of orthopedic problems in RTT. Documentation of the epidemiology of scoliosis and fracture has been enhanced by interrogation of large databases, but the prevalence of other orthopedic disorders is estimated from smaller case series. In the absence of clinical trials that address outcomes specifically in individuals with RTT, management draws heavily on the clinical experience of experts and general principles that have been applied to children with other neurological disorders, including cerebral palsy.
