Availability and accessibility of healthy and unhealthy foods influences food choice, and evaluation of food environments is increasingly important to government and health organisations. High quality data is required to describe and measure food environments, including classification of food outlet types. However, in Perth, there has been limited assessment of the healthfulness of foods sold, and no classification of food outlet type to date. The overall aim of this project is to classify, map and measure access to all food and beverage businesses within the 13 local governments in the East Metropolitan Health Service as a test of concept for use in public health nutrition intervention planning.
