Parent Child Assistance Program - A Pilot Study in Perth

Investigators: Dr Martyn Symons, Dr Amy Finlay-Jones

Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) exposure during pregnancy is linked to serious adverse child outcomes, including FASD. The Parent-Child Assistance Program (PCAP) supports disengaged women with problematic AOD use, who are pregnant or have young children. PCAP has been shown to reduce alcohol exposed pregnancies, promote AOD abstinence, increase employment and family planning and improve child outcomes.

During this project home visitation case management will be provided by trained and experienced counsellors/social workers. Counsellors will help women to engage with services effectively to meet their own goals via a combination of positive relationships, creating conversations about change and harm reduction concepts. Case management is provided in a non-judgmental way and guaranteed for three years. Evaluation will follow UK Medical Research Council guidance for complex interventions.
