Rainbow Knowledge: Broome & Kununurra is a First Nations led research project that aims to explore the perspectives, social emotional wellbeing (SEWB) and mental health experiences of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Asexual (LGBTQA+) or other sexually and/or gender diverse identifying young people living in the Broome and Kununurra.

​The Rainbow Knowledge: Broome and Kununurra project arose out of the Walkern Katatdjin: Rainbow Knowledge project and community report which looked at the social wellbeing of LGBTQA+ Aboriginal young people living in Perth only. Some of the participants were from the Kimberley but living away from home and noted there was a need to facilitate the project in the Kimberley too. The Rainbow Knowledge: Broome & Kununurra Project Advisory Group and Community Research Assistant provide the researchers with area-based support and knowledge of the First Nations LGBTQA+ community experience and with the help of specific Aboriginal health services, we have begun recruitment for Broome and Kununurra.

We are currently recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQA+ young people living in Broome and Kununurra to take part in an interview and/or focus group. Please contact the team to participate. You can take part in an interview/focus group if you are:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and
  • LGBTQA+ and
  • 14-29 years old and
  • Living in Broome or Kununurra
