Characterising the epidemiology of RSV in Australian children through record linkage: clinical burden, outcomes and risk factors

Investigators: Hannah Moore, Mejbah Bhuiyan, Peter Richmond

Project description

We propose to build on our established track record and utilise our unique record linkage resources combined with the most recent 10 years of data to address key questions in paediatric epidemiology of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Specifically, we will address risk factors for respiratory morbidity following RSV infection in infancy, describe the secondary health care burden by birth month and prematurity and compare RSV-confirmed rates to that of other respiratory viral pathogens. The outcomes from this project will include understanding the preventable burden of RSV that could be afforded by seasonal prevention measures (new monoclonal antibodies and vaccination programs), as well as providing a mechanism to assess the real-world effectiveness, including cost effectiveness, of prevention measures incorporating multiple clinical endpoints.
