Project description

Some studies indicate siblings of transgender (trans) and gender diverse young people often experience negative mental health impacts such as anxiety and depression due to complicated familial, individual and social factors associated with having a trans sibling. This project aims to fill a crucial research gap by better understanding the experiences and needs of siblings aged 14 to 25 years of trans children and young people aged up to 25 years to support their mental health and wellbeing.

Project outputs

We will conduct interviews with siblings in Western Australia to develop a detailed understanding of aspects such as their mental health, their familial and wider relationships, and desired support and resource needs. Using these findings, we will develop and launch a national online survey for siblings to gather comprehensive data. The results of this research will guide the development of evidence-based custom resources such as information sheets to support siblings. We will also use these findings to inform service providers and policy makers to develop services and resources that will better address siblings’ support needs.
