Start smart: a program for healthy mobile technology use by young children

Investigators: Donna Cross

External collaborators: Leon Straker (Curtin University of Technology), Erin Howie (Curtin University of Technology), Susan Danby (Queensland University of Technology)

The project aims to design, test, refine and disseminate an early childhood centre intervention (Smart Start) to improve young children’s and their families’ technology use practices.

Newer technology use by young children is growing rapidly, particularly the use of mobile touchscreen technology like iPads and smart phones. This technology has many potential educational, emotional, social and physical benefits, but must be used wisely to avoid unintended negative consequences for healthy psychological, social, and physical development. We believe the health and development risks are particularly acute for children in areas of disadvantage.

The Smart Start program will enhance the capacity of childcare staff and parents to promote the healthy use of mobile technology among young children in areas of high developmental vulnerability.
