The Proactive Study

Project description

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurobiological developmental disorder that affects the way a person interacts and communicates, as well as the way they learn and behave. Individuals with autism have difficulty with social communication and interaction, and they often have restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviours, interests or activities. Research suggests that the proportion of beneficial bacteria in the gut is reduced (called ‘dysbiosis’) in children with autism and may explain some behavioural symptoms.

We plan to study whether probiotic supplementation will improve the proportion of beneficial bacteria in the gut of children with autism and if it has any effect in improving their behavioural symptoms.

Project outputs

Microbiome compositional changes and improved developmental outcomes.
