Project description

Accessible, evidence-based interventions for young people with chronic illness are urgently needed to promote improved mental health and daily functioning. Online self-compassion training offers a promising means of promoting positive mental health in chronically ill youth. Self-compassion involves taking a mindful, accepting approach to difficult experiences, being aware that one is not alone in one’s suffering, and being kind and understanding with oneself during challenging times. Self-compassion is a strong predictor of mental health outcomes among youth, and self-compassion is lower among those with chronic disease. As a result, interventions that build self-compassion have potential to substantially improve the mental health of this group. Over this two-year project, we will are conducting a randomised controlled trial to determined whether online self-compassion training can promote wellbeing and reduce symptoms of mental illness in young people (16-25 years) with chronic illness.
