BANK CF: The Respiratory Centre BIOBANK

The Australian Respiratory Early Surveillance Team for Cystic Fibrosis (AREST CF) program has grown from an early surveillance program initiated in Perth in 1999, which performed bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) to evaluate pulmonary infection and inflammation, as well as infant lung function testing.

End-inspiratory molar mass step correction for analysis of infant multiple breath washout tests

We aimed to evaluate the use of the EIMM-step method in a broad range of infants.

Research

Previous Influenza Infection Exacerbates Allergen Specific Response and Impairs Airway Barrier Integrity in Pre-Sensitized Mice

In this study we assessed the effects of antigen exposure in mice pre‐sensitized with allergen following viral infection on changes in lung function, cellular responses and tight junction expression.

Research

The influence of moving walls on respiratory aerosol deposition modelling

This work initially examines particle deposition in a Weibull-type geometry, comparing traditional computational fluid dynamics approaches with a novel...

Partial amelioration of a chronic cigarette-smoke-induced phenotype in mice by switching to electronic cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes ("e-cigarettes") are often marketed as smoking cessation tools and are used by smokers to reduce/quit cigarette smoking. The objective of this study was to assess the health effects of switching to e-cigarettes after long-term smoking in a mouse model and compare these effects with continued smoking, or quitting entirely.

Research

A systematic approach to multiple breath nitrogen washout test quality

The application of the systematic review improved inter-observer agreement but did not affect reported multiple breath washout outcomes

Research

Developing a smartphone application to support social connectedness and wellbeing in young people with cystic fibrosis

This study developed and tested a highly usable, and moderately acceptable, smartphone app to improve the psychosocial health of young people living with CF

How ‘healthy’ do children really need to be? Going beyond the limits

The authors assessed the impact of including preschool‐aged children with a history of preterm birth, early life wheeze, asthma diagnoses and/or recent respiratory symptoms in healthy reference ranges for respiratory impedance using the forced oscillation technique (FOT).

Clinical utility of preoperative pulmonary function testing in pediatrics

Perioperative respiratory adverse events pose a significant risk in pediatric anesthesia, and identifying these risks is vital. Traditionally, this is assessed using history and examination. However, the perioperative risk is multifactorial, and children with complex medical backgrounds such as chronic lung disease or obesity may benefit from additional objective preoperative pulmonary function tests.
