Validation and Comparison of Pediatric Appendicitis Scores and Management Strategies (Project SPASMS): Protocol for a Prospective Multicenter Observational StudyAbdominal pain is a common reason for children to attend the Emergency Department (ED) with acute appendicitis being the most common surgical cause. Various clinical prediction scores (CPSs) have been developed to assist in determining the risk of appendicitis; however, CPSs have been inadequately validated in children and haphazardly adopted in Australia and New Zealand EDs.

Pharmacogenomics in pediatric oncology: Australian adolescent or young adult and caregiver perspectivesPreemptive pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing in pediatric oncology patients could reduce toxicity and improve efficacy of medications yet remains underutilized. Consumer identified implementation barriers have not been extensively explored nor included adolescent or young adult (AYA) patient perspectives. This study describes Australian pediatric oncology consumer perspectives on PGx testing, elucidating barriers to implementation.

Physiological responses to exercise in survivors of preterm birth: a meta-analysisSurvivors of preterm birth (<37 weeks' gestation) have low peak oxygen uptake, a global measure of aerobic fitness and an established predictor of increased morbidity and mortality. However, little is known about other cardiopulmonary outcome measures in this population. We addressed the hypothesis that preterm birth is associated with abnormal respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic responses to exercise, as assessed by cardiopulmonary exercise testing, via a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Quicker team launch times for urgent priority neonatal retrievals: A Quality Improvement Initiative studyNeonatal retrieval networks have adopted time-centric quality metrics as Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for setting and comparing benchmarking standards. Quicker launch time (departure from base), an essential KPI, enables neonatal retrieval teams to rapidly provide higher-level care to sick infants. The Newborn Emergency Transport Services of Western Australia (NETS WA) facilitates neonatal transfers across largest global retrieval area necessitating quicker team launch times for urgent retrievals. NETS WA conducted a quality improvement (QI) study to quicken team launch times for urgent retrievals.

Concentration of food allergens in breastmilk and association with maternal factors– A systematic reviewCommon food allergens have been detected in breast milk with wide inter-individual variations in concentrations. As maternal factors, such as age, smoking, and body mass index have been associated with breast milk composition, we aimed to identify maternal characteristics associated with the concentration of food allergens in breast milk.

Benchmarking Imputed Low Coverage Genomes in a Human Population Genetics ContextOngoing advances in population genomic methodologies have recently enabled the study of millions of loci across hundreds of genomes at a relatively low cost, by leveraging a combination of low-coverage shotgun sequencing and innovative genotype imputation methods. This approach has the potential to provide abundant genotype information at low costs comparable to another widely used cost-effective genotyping approach-that is, SNP panels-while avoiding potential issues related to loci being ascertained in distantly related populations.

Rewiring endogenous genes in CAR T cells for tumour-restricted payload deliveryThe efficacy of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy in solid tumours is limited by immunosuppression and antigen heterogeneity. To overcome these barriers, 'armoured' CAR T cells, which secrete proinflammatory cytokines, have been developed. However, their clinical application has been limited because of toxicity related to peripheral expression of the armouring transgene.

The current study was designed to evaluate the safety, usability and feasibility of 'COMPASS,' a self-compassion chatbot intervention.
