Alcohol and Pregnancy & FASD Research

The ultimate goal of the Alcohol and Pregnancy and FASD Research Team is to make FASD history in Australia.

The ultimate goal of our Alcohol and Pregnancy and FASD Research Team is to prevent children in Australia from being born with FASD.

People with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) have impairments that are permanent and negatively impact upon their development. FASD affects the ability to think, learn, focus attention and control behaviour and emotions. People with FASD maybe impulsive and often have low self-esteem and mental health problems. Their impairments may also lead to socially unacceptable behaviour, alcohol and other drug use, and early interactions with police and the justice system.

It is important that everyone is aware of the harm that can be caused by alcohol to the developing baby. Our Alcohol and Pregnancy and FASD Research Team is working with communities and stakeholders to:

  • develop and implement effective prevention strategies to reduce alcohol use during pregnancy
  • build the capacity of health professionals to diagnose FASD
  • educate frontline professionals about recognising and understanding neurodisability among young people, reframing their behaviours and responding appropriately to their needs
  • implement and evaluate programs that support children with FASD and their families, particularly early interventions that will reduce secondary effects and lifelong impairment.

Collaboration is at the forefront of research in the Alcohol and Pregnancy & FASD Research Team. We work with consumers and the community, external researchers, health professionals, service providers and policy makers across Western Australia, Australia and internationally.

Efficacy of cannabinoids in neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders among children and adolescents: a systematic review

A better understanding of the endocannabinoid system and a relaxation in regulatory control of cannabis globally has increased interest in the medicinal use of cannabinoid-based products (CBP). We provide a systematic review of the rationale and current clinical trial evidence for CBP in the treatment of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents.

A systematic review of the biological, social, and environmental determinants of intellectual disability in children and adolescents

This systematic review aimed to identify the most important social, environmental, biological, and/or genetic risk factors for intellectual disability.

Infant feeding practices and childhood acute leukemia: Findings from the Childhood Cancer & Leukemia International Consortium

Increasing evidence suggests that breastfeeding may protect from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia. However, most studies have limited their analyses to any breastfeeding, and only a few data have examined exclusive breastfeeding, or other exposures such as formula milk.

Exploring offending characteristics of young people with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder in Western Australia

Neurodevelopmental impairments resulting from Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) can increase the likelihood of justice system involvement. This study compared offence characteristics in young people with FASD to demographically matched controls (n = 500) in Western Australia.
